Other brands survive harsh conditions. Morningstar thrives in them.
With more than 25 years of experience and well over four million products in over 100 countries – most of them still in operation – Morningstar has truly earned its reputation for building the “world’s leading solar controllers.” At Morningstar, the word “reliability” means a lot more than a marketing adjective. Morningstar’s employee-owned culture works hard to maintain the lowest hardware failure rate in the industry, because our own reputations literally ship with every product.
That’s why system designers of the most mission-critical solar energy installations around the world insist on Morningstar components, and why you should too on your next project. From mineral mines in South America to telecom repeater stations in Canada, from gas wells in the Middle East to mountain peaks in Nepal, Morningstar technology and legendary quality make the difference between success and failure – and make renewable energy a practical, cost-effective, and long-term solution.
TrakStar MPPT
All Morningstar MPPT (Multiple Power Point Tracking) Controllers have TrakStar™ technology to maximize energy harvest by operating the system at the maximum power level possible.
- Rapidly sweeps the entire solar I-V curve
- Recognizes multiple power points during shading or mixed solar arrays
- Provides superior performance at sunrise and low solar insulation levels
TrakStar helps reduce system cost in three ways:
- Enables using less expensive high voltage (on-grid) modules for off-grid battery charging
- Reduces cable sizes by using a higher voltage solar array to charge a lower voltage battery
- Decreases the number of solar modules needed based on the extra energy harvest (boost)
FAQ's
- What battery chemistries will this controller safely support?
Manufacturer's response: "The TS-MPPT has been successfully used with Lithium type batteries and can be custom configured to work with a variety of battery types. Specific charge configuration requirements, such as Absorption voltage and duration, Float voltage, etc,) should be discussed and verified with the battery manufacturer." The "Morningstar TriStar MPPT Installation and Operation Manual" also includes a chart of compatible battery chemistries: Gel, Sealed, AGM/Flooded, Flooded, and L-16. - Do the TriStar MPPT controllers have a diversion function?
No, the TriStar MPPT controllers do not have a diversion function because they have no load circuit. You can, however, pair it with a TriStar PWM controller (e.g. TS-30, -45, AND -60) for a diversion load. - The datasheet says that the battery operating voltage range is 8-72 VDC. Does that mean I can connect a 72V battery bank?
No, the TriStar MPPT Charge Controllers can only be used with a 12, 24, or 48 VDC battery bank. The range means that below 8V, the controller will not have enough power and will shut down. Above 72V, the controller will be damaged. - Can I use the Morningstar TriStar MPPT Charge Controller in a wind or hydro application?
Wind and Hydro are only supported with certain hydro manufacturers and/or with an SD Wind Energy 3kW wind turbine. Outside of those approved manufacturers, wind and hydro systems are not supported. Please contact us to determine if your hydro manufacturer is a supported brand. - Can I use different amp TriStar MPPT solar controllers on the same battery bank?
Yes, you can use a TS-MPPT-30, TS-MPPT-45, or a TS-MPPT-60 on the same battery bank. Just be certain to have the same charge settings in all controllers to minimize charging conflicts.
